About Ernie Banks
"Mr. Cub," Ernie Banks began his pro career in 1950 with the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League before signing with the Chicago Cubs, for whom he debuted on September 17, 1953 as the franchise's first Black player. This 1954 Topps issue is his rookie card, one of the set's "Big Three" rookies. A slugging shortstop who moved to first base in 1961 after a knee injury, Banks spent all 19 of his seasons (1953-1971) with the Cubs. He won back-to-back National League MVP Awards in 1958 and 1959 — the NL's first player to do so — leading the league with 47 home runs in 1958, then the most ever by a shortstop. A 14-time NL All-Star and the 1960 Gold Glove shortstop, he retired with 512 home runs, 2,583 hits, 1,636 RBI and a .274 average over 2,528 games. Famous for his sunny "Let's play two!", Banks never reached the postseason but was elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot in 1977; the Cubs retired his No. 14 in 1982.
