About Sid Hudson

Sid Hudson was a lanky 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher who entered pro ball in 1938 with the Class D Sanford Lookouts, a Washington Senators affiliate, and dominated the 1939 Florida State League (24-4, 1.79 ERA, 192 strikeouts) to earn a big-league call. Debuting with Washington on April 18, 1940, he won 17 games as a rookie, threw two one-hitters, and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting to Lou Boudreau by three votes. Hudson made the American League All-Star team in both 1941 and 1942, then lost three seasons (1943-45) to Army Air Forces service in the Pacific during World War II. Pitching for perennially weak Senators clubs, he authored a 1-0 shutout of the Yankees before 58,000 fans on Babe Ruth Day, April 27, 1947. Traded to the Boston Red Sox in June 1952, he closed out a 12-year career (his final season shown on this 1954 Topps card) at 104-152 with a 4.28 ERA, 734 strikeouts, and 123 complete games. He later served roughly 25 years as a pitching coach for the Washington/Texas Rangers franchise.
