1954 Topps #92 Wally Westlake

About Wally Westlake
Waldon Thomas "Wally" Westlake (1920-2019), a right-handed-hitting outfielder from Gridley, California, signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization in 1940 and developed in the Pacific Coast League with the Oakland Oaks, where he credited manager Casey Stengel with sharpening his game (.315 in 1946). He reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947 and played ten seasons (1947-1956) for the Pirates, Cardinals, Reds, Indians, Orioles, and Phillies. His best years came in Pittsburgh alongside roommate Ralph Kiner, driving in 104 runs with 23 homers in 1949 and belting 24 home runs in 1950. He hit for the cycle twice as a Pirate, against Brooklyn on July 30, 1948, and against the Boston Braves on June 14, 1949, and was named to the 1951 National League All-Star team. Traded to Cleveland, he was a role player on the 111-win 1954 Indians pictured here, appearing in that year's World Series against the Giants. Over 958 games he batted .272 with 848 hits, 127 home runs, and 539 RBI.
