1954 Topps #160 Red Kress

About Red Kress
Card #160 pictures Red Kress as a Cleveland Indians coach, the role he filled when this card was issued. Ralph "Red" Kress (1905-1962) was signed by the St. Louis Browns in December 1926 after being discovered in a Standard Oil twilight league, and after hitting .330 at Tulsa he reached the majors in 1927. A shortstop who could play nearly every position, he spent 14 seasons (1927-1946) with the Browns, White Sox, Senators, Tigers, and Giants. His finest years came in St. Louis: he hit .305 with 107 RBI in 1929, .313 with 112 RBI in 1930, and .311 with 114 RBI in 1931. Kress batted .286 with 1,454 hits, 89 home runs, and 799 RBI over 1,391 games, and was named 1937 American Association MVP at Minneapolis (.334, 27 HR, 157 RBI). He coached the Indians (1953-1960), Angels (1961), and 1962 Mets, whose skipper Casey Stengel called him "the hardest working man I ever knew." He died of a heart attack in 1962.
