About Jim Hegan

James Edward Hegan was a right-handed catcher whom the Cleveland Indians signed in 1938 out of Lynn English High School in his native Lynn, Massachusetts, at age 17. After a minor-league apprenticeship, he debuted on September 9, 1941, and went on to play 17 major-league seasons (1941-42, 1946-60), the bulk of them (1941-42, 1946-57) with Cleveland before finishing with the Tigers, Phillies, Giants, and Cubs. Though a light hitter—he batted .228 with 1,087 hits, 92 home runs, and 525 RBI over 1,666 games—Hegan was prized for his defense and game-calling, earning five American League All-Star selections (1947, 1949-52) and setting the Indians' franchise record for games caught. He handled Cleveland's celebrated pitching staff, catching three no-hitters (Don Black in 1947, Bob Lemon in 1948, and Bob Feller's third in 1951) and anchoring the 1948 World Series champions. After his playing days he became a respected coach, earning additional World Series rings with the New York Yankees. This card is a Series 1 issue found with both white and gray back stock.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)

Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.

  • White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
  • Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
