About Dave Philley

A switch-hitting outfielder from Paris, Texas, Dave Philley (1920-2012) attended East Texas State and was signed by the Chicago White Sox in 1940 as a catcher; he had learned to bat from both sides as a boy after a fall from a tree fractured his left arm. Debuting in 1941, he played 18 major-league seasons for eight clubs, including the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, and the Cleveland Indians pictured on this 1954 Topps card. Known for his speed and strong arm, he led American League outfielders in assists three times (1948, 1950, 1953) and reached the 1954 World Series with the pennant-winning Indians, who were swept by the New York Giants. Philley became one of the game's premier pinch-hitters late in his career: in 1958 he closed the season with eight straight pinch hits, then singled on 1959's Opening Day for nine consecutive, a major-league record, and at age 41 in 1961 he set an AL mark with 24 pinch hits. He finished a .270 hitter with 1,700 hits, 84 home runs, and 729 RBI over 1,904 games.
