About Larry Doby
Lawrence Eugene "Larry" Doby signed with the Negro National League's Newark Eagles at age 17 in 1942 and, after Navy service, helped Newark win the 1946 Negro League World Series alongside Monte Irvin. On July 5, 1947 — about three months after Jackie Robinson debuted — Doby became the first Black player in the American League, integrating it with the Cleveland Indians and going straight from the Negro Leagues to the majors. A center fielder, he starred for Cleveland (1947–1955), later played for the Chicago White Sox, and finished his 13-year career in 1959. Doby was a seven-time consecutive All-Star (1949–1955), led the AL in home runs twice (1952 and 1954) and in RBIs in 1954 (126), and helped Cleveland win the 1948 World Series, where he hit the first World Series home run by a Black player. He batted .283 with 1,515 hits, 253 home runs, and 970 RBIs over 1,533 games. In 1978 he became MLB's second Black manager, with the White Sox, and he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998.
