About Bud Podbielan
Clarence Anthony "Bud" Podbielan was a right-handed pitcher signed as an amateur free agent by the Brooklyn Dodgers after World War II. Born March 6, 1924, in Curlew, Washington, he reached the majors with Brooklyn in 1949 and pitched nine big-league seasons split among the Dodgers (1949-1952), the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs (1952-1955 and 1957), and the Cleveland Indians (1959). Primarily a swingman, he compiled a career record of 25-42 with a 4.49 ERA and 242 strikeouts over 172 games (76 starts, 20 complete games, 2 shutouts) and 641 innings; he also went 113-91 across eleven minor-league seasons. His most notorious moment came on May 18, 1953, when, pitching for Cincinnati, he walked a franchise-record thirteen batters in a ten-inning game against his old Brooklyn club. This 1954 Topps card (#2 series) captures him as a Redleg. Podbielan died October 26, 1982, in Syracuse, New York, at age 58.
