About Herman Wehmeier

A hard-throwing right-hander, Herman Ralph Wehmeier was signed by his hometown Cincinnati Reds straight out of high school in 1945, an 18-year-old prospect whom manager Bill McKechnie tabbed a "surefire star." He debuted that September and pitched 13 major-league seasons for the Reds/Redlegs (1945, 1947-54), Philadelphia Phillies (1954-56), St. Louis Cardinals (1956-58), and Detroit Tigers (1958), finishing 92-108 with a 4.80 ERA, 794 strikeouts, 79 complete games, and 9 shutouts over 361 appearances. Wildness dogged him: he led the National League in walks three times (1949, 1950, 1952) and in wild pitches twice, becoming, in GM Gabe Paul's words, one of the most mercilessly booed players in Cincinnati history. He also went winless against the Cardinals (0-11) before they acquired him. His most famous outing came late in the 1956 pennant race, a 12-inning duel with Warren Spahn that St. Louis won on doubles by Stan Musial and Rip Repulski. He died of a heart attack in 1973 at age 46 while testifying at a Dallas trial.
