About Chuck Harmon

A basketball All-American at the University of Toledo who served in the Navy during World War II, Charles Byron "Chuck" Harmon reached organized baseball through the St. Louis Browns system after a brief 1947 turn with the Negro leagues' Indianapolis Clowns under the alias "Charlie Fine." He hit over .300 across five straight minor-league seasons before Cincinnati promoted him. On April 17, 1954, at Milwaukee's County Stadium, the right-handed utilityman pinch-hit and popped out — but in doing so became the first African American to play for the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs, moments after teammate Nino Escalera. A third baseman, outfielder, and first baseman, Harmon spent four big-league seasons (1954–1957) with the Redlegs, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .238 with 141 hits, 7 home runs, 59 RBI, and 25 stolen bases in 289 games. His versatility earned him the nickname "The Glove," for keeping a different mitt for each position. This 1954 Topps card is his rookie card. Harmon was inducted into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame in 2014 and honored with a statue in 2015; he died in 2019 at age 94.
