About Harry Perkowski
Harry Walter Perkowski was a left-handed pitcher who broke into pro ball out of the Virginia coal fields, throwing semi-pro before a stint with the Natchez Giants of the Evangeline League and Navy service in World War II, when he saw four invasions across Africa, Sicily, Italy and Normandy. A native of Dante, Virginia, he reached the majors with the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs in 1947 and pitched eight seasons (1947, 1949-1954 with Cincinnati; 1955 with the Chicago Cubs). Armed with a hard fastball and a sharp curve but plagued by wildness, he went 33-40 with a 4.37 ERA and 296 strikeouts against 324 walks over 184 games. His best year came in 1952 (12-10, 194 innings). His signature game was July 19, 1953, when he threw a 12-inning, three-hit shutout to beat the New York Giants 1-0, the run scoring on a Hobie Landrith walk-off homer. A good-hitting pitcher, he was also used to pinch-hit. After baseball he worked in law enforcement, drove ambulances and school buses, and served with the West Virginia Department of Highways; he died in Beckley, West Virginia in 2016 at age 93.
