About Ed Bailey

Lonas Edgar "Gar" Bailey Jr. was a hard-hitting catcher signed by the Cincinnati Reds as an amateur free agent in 1950. A left-handed batter out of Strawberry Plains, Tennessee, he reached the majors with Cincinnati in 1953 and played 14 seasons (through 1966) for the Reds/Redlegs, San Francisco Giants, Milwaukee Braves, Chicago Cubs, and California Angels. A six-time All-Star who started for the National League in 1956 and 1957, Bailey enjoyed a career year in 1956, hitting .300 with 28 home runs and 75 RBI while leading the NL in runners caught stealing. His nickname, "Gar," was short for Edgar, and he was known for his brash, talkative style behind the plate. Traded to the Giants in 1961, he homered in Game 3 of the 1962 World Series and caught Juan Marichal's 1963 no-hitter. Over 1,212 games he batted .256 with 155 home runs and 540 RBI.
