About Roy McMillan

Discovered in 1947 at a Cincinnati Reds tryout camp in McKinney, Texas by scout Hack Miller, the Bonham, Texas-born Roy McMillan climbed through the minors with the Ballinger Cats of the Longhorn League and the Tulsa Oilers before reaching the majors in 1951. A right-handed shortstop, he spent 16 seasons (1951-1966) with the Cincinnati Reds (Redlegs), Milwaukee Braves and New York Mets, earning renown as one of the finest defensive shortstops of his era. Nicknamed "Mr. Shortstop" for his glove work, he was a two-time All-Star (1956, 1957) and won the first three National League Gold Gloves ever awarded to a shortstop, in 1957, 1958 and 1959. In 1954 he set a major-league record with 129 double plays. He batted .243 with 1,639 hits, 68 home runs and 594 RBI over 2,093 games. After retiring he managed the Milwaukee Brewers (1972) and New York Mets (1975). This is a standard Series 3 base card; McMillan's Redlegs team name reflects Cincinnati's mid-1950s rebranding.
