About Frank Smith

Frank Thomas Smith was a right-handed relief pitcher who spent parts of seven big-league seasons (1950-1956), the bulk of them with the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs, the club pictured on this 1954 Topps card. Born April 4, 1928, in Pierrepont Manor, New York, he climbed through minor-league stops including the Tulsa Oilers and Nashville Vols before reaching Cincinnati in 1950. One of the National League's busier bullpen arms in an era before the "closer" role was defined, he worked 50-plus games in four different seasons, going 12-11 in 1952 and posting an 8-1 mark in 1953. His finest year came in this card's 1954 season, when he appeared in 50 games with a career-best 2.67 ERA and 20 saves for the Redlegs. A brief 1955 stint with the St. Louis Cardinals preceded a final two-game appearance back in Cincinnati in 1956. Nicknamed "Fireball," Smith finished 35-33 with a 3.81 ERA, 277 strikeouts, and 44 saves over 271 appearances. He died September 24, 2005, in Malone, Florida.
