About Preston Ward
Preston Meyer Ward (1927-2013) was a left-handed-hitting, right-handed-throwing first baseman who entered the Brooklyn Dodgers farm system in 1944 at age 16 and reached the majors with Brooklyn in 1948. Over nine big-league seasons (1948-1959) he played for the Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Athletics, appearing mostly at first base but also filling in at the outfield and third base. His career was interrupted by military service during the Korean War, which cost him the 1951 and 1952 seasons before he returned as a regular in 1953. Ward batted .253 with 522 hits, 50 home runs and 262 RBI across 744 games, his best year coming in 1958 when he hit .284 in a season split between Cleveland and Kansas City. This 1954 Topps card (#72) shows him as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the club he joined during the 1953 season. A steady utility man rather than a star, Ward was never selected to an All-Star team and did not appear in a World Series.
