1954 Topps #134 Cal Hogue

About Cal Hogue
Calvin Grey Hogue (1927-2005), a 6-foot right-handed pitcher from Dayton, Ohio, signed with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1945 as a 17-year-old and ground out a long minor-league apprenticeship across seven clubs and roughly a decade, including a 10-3 season with the Class A Charleston Rebels that earned his call-up. He reached the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates, debuting July 15, 1952, and pitched parts of three seasons (1952-1954), all with Pittsburgh. In his second big-league outing he tossed a complete-game four-hitter to beat the Phillies 2-1, and he threw another complete game to top the Giants 6-4 in September 1953. Chronic control trouble (96 walks) held him to a 2-10 record and 4.91 ERA over 25 games; manager Fred Haney said he had to stop "fighting himself." He later worked as a union plumber near Dayton. No documented nickname; this is not a rookie card and carries no card error.
