About Dick Cole

A versatile infielder, Richard Roy "Dick" Cole was signed as a 17-year-old amateur by St. Louis Cardinals scout Bob Hughes in August 1943, then spent 1944-1946 in the U.S. Army—serving at Camp Roberts, California, where he played alongside future Hall of Famer Bobby Doerr. After years in the Cardinals' farm system, he debuted with St. Louis in 1951 but was dealt to the Pittsburgh Pirates after 15 games, becoming a spot starter and defensive replacement across shortstop, second, and third. Over six seasons (1951, 1953-1957) with the Cardinals, Pirates, and Milwaukee Braves, Cole batted .249 with 303 hits, 2 home runs, and 107 RBI in 456 games. His finest year came in 1954—the season this rookie card captures—when he hit .270 with 22 doubles, 5 triples, and 40 RBI in 138 games, his lone homer that year coming off Dodgers All-Star Carl Erskine. Traded to Milwaukee in April 1957, he was part of the Braves' World Series-winning club. Manager Fred Haney called him his "little Bobo." Cole never made an All-Star team, but he later became a longtime major-league scout and was inducted into the Long Beach Baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.
