About Bob Turley

Signed by the St. Louis Browns as an amateur the day after his 1948 high-school graduation for a $600 bonus, right-hander Bob Turley dominated the minors—leading his league with 205 strikeouts at Aberdeen in 1949 and earning Texas League MVP honors in 1951. He debuted with the Browns in 1951 and moved with the franchise to become a Baltimore Oriole, then starred over 12 major-league seasons (1951, 1953–63) with the Browns/Orioles, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and Boston Red Sox. A three-time All-Star (1954, 1955, 1958), he led the AL with 185 strikeouts in 1954. Turley's peak came in 1958, when he went 21-7, won the Cy Young Award (edging Warren Spahn by one vote) and was named World Series MVP as the Yankees rallied from a 3-1 deficit—he threw a Game 5 shutout, saved Game 6, and won Game 7 in relief. A World Series champion in 1956 and 1958, he finished 101-85 with a 3.64 ERA and 1,265 strikeouts. Nicknamed "Bullet Bob" after Look magazine clocked his fastball at 98 mph using a bullet timer from Aberdeen Proving Ground, this 1954 Topps issue is his rookie card.
