About Joe Coleman
Joseph Patrick Coleman (1922-1997), a right-handed pitcher from Medford, Massachusetts, was signed off the Malden Catholic High School and Boston College sandlots by Connie Mack, who reportedly paid no bonus. He debuted with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1942, missed 1943-1945 serving as a U.S. Navy aviator in World War II, and pitched ten major-league seasons (1942, 1946-1955) for the Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, and Detroit Tigers. His finest early year came in 1948, when he earned an American League All-Star selection and worked three scoreless innings in the mid-summer classic. Coleman went 52-76 with a 4.38 ERA and 444 strikeouts in 223 games. His 1954 season pictured on this card was a comeback with the new Baltimore Orioles, headlined by a September 1-0 near no-hitter against the Yankees. He founded a baseball dynasty: his son Joe was a two-time 20-game winner and 1972 All-Star, and grandson Casey Coleman completed the first three-generation pitching lineage in major-league history.
