1954 Topps #48 Billy Hunter

About Billy Hunter
Gordon William "Billy" Hunter was a light-hitting, slick-fielding shortstop originally signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1948 out of Pennsylvania State University, where he attended on a baseball and football scholarship. After five years in the Dodgers' minor-league system he was traded to the St. Louis Browns, and as a rookie in 1953 he was the starting shortstop for the final Browns club and earned an All-Star Game selection that season. When the franchise moved east to become the modern Baltimore Orioles in 1954, Hunter was their first Opening Day shortstop, and this card captures him during that inaugural Orioles campaign. He was later traded to the New York Yankees, where he was a reserve on the 1956 World Series champions, and closed his six-season career (1953-1958) with the Kansas City Athletics and Cleveland Indians. Over 630 games he batted .219 with 16 home runs and 144 RBI. Hunter enjoyed a far longer second act in the game: a longtime Orioles third-base coach on their 1966 and 1970 World Series-winning teams and manager of the Texas Rangers (1977-1978). He died July 3, 2025, at age 97, the last surviving member of both the St. Louis Browns and the 1954 Orioles.

Variations & how to tell them apart
White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)
Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.
- White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
- Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
