About Duane Pillette

A tall (6'3") right-handed pitcher, Duane "Dee" Pillette was signed by Yankees scout Joe Devine, who steered him to a scholarship at Santa Clara University before he served as a Naval Air Cadet in World War II. After minor-league seasons at Newark and Portland, he reached the majors in 1949 and pitched eight seasons (1949–1956) for four clubs: the New York Yankees, St. Louis Browns, Baltimore Orioles, and Philadelphia Phillies. A workhorse on second-division teams, he compiled a 38–66 record with a 4.40 ERA, 34 complete games, and 305 strikeouts over 188 appearances, and led the American League in losses (14) in 1951. Pillette owns a footnote in franchise history: he was the starting pitcher in the final St. Louis Browns game in 1953, then earned the first win for the relocated Baltimore Orioles in 1954 with a complete-game 3–2 victory over Detroit. His 1954 season was his best (10–14, 3.12 ERA). Nicknamed "Dee" since his San Diego High School days, he was the son of big-league pitcher Herman Pillette (Reds and Tigers, 1917–1924); father and son remain the only pair to each lead the AL in losses in a season.
