1954 Topps #246 Howie Fox

About Howie Fox
Howard Francis "Howie" Fox was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Cincinnati Reds organization and broke into pro ball in 1943, reaching the majors with Cincinnati in 1944. Over nine big-league seasons he pitched for the Reds (1944-46, 1948-51), Philadelphia Phillies (1952), and Baltimore Orioles (1954), compiling a 43-72 record with a 4.33 ERA and 342 strikeouts in 248 games (132 starts) across 1,108-1/3 innings. His best year was 1950 (11-8), but he is often remembered for 1949, when his 6-19 mark led the majors in losses. Fox holds a unique piece of history: pitching for the 1953 minor-league Baltimore Orioles and then the 1954 major-league Orioles that replaced them, he was the only man to play for both, working exclusively in relief (38 games) for the American League club pictured on this Series 3 card. Tragically, Fox was stabbed to death at age 34 on October 9, 1955, during a disturbance at the San Antonio tavern he owned while pitching for the Texas League Missions.
