About Tom Oliver
Thomas Noble "Rebel" Oliver appears on card #207 as a Baltimore Orioles coach, but the card honors a lifer whose baseball roots ran deep. Born January 15, 1903, in Montgomery, Alabama, Oliver signed his first pro contract with New Orleans of the Southern Association in 1922 and toiled roughly two decades in the minors before finally reaching the majors. A slick center fielder praised for his glove and range, he spent all four of his big-league seasons (1930-1933) with the Boston Red Sox, batting .277 with 534 hits and 176 RBI over 514 games. In his 1930 rookie year he led the American League in games played (154) and at-bats (646). Remarkably, Oliver never hit a home run in the majors and holds the modern record for most career at-bats (1,931) without one. Nicknamed "Rebel" for his Alabama drawl, he coached for Jimmy Dykes's Philadelphia Athletics from 1951, then followed Dykes to Baltimore in 1954 when the Browns relocated, which places him in this set. He later managed and scouted for nearly six decades, and is credited with giving Hall of Famer George Kell his professional start at Lancaster in 1942.
