1954 Topps #206 Ray Crone

About Ray Crone
Card #206 is the rookie card of Ray Crone (Raymond Hayes Crone, 1931-2026), a right-handed pitcher out of Memphis, Tennessee, who signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1949, one day after his high-school graduation, at age 17. After a strong minor-league apprenticeship — including a roughly 19-win, sub-2.50-ERA season for the South Atlantic League's Jacksonville Braves — he debuted with the Milwaukee Braves in 1954 and pitched five big-league seasons (Milwaukee 1954-57, New York/San Francisco Giants 1957-58). His best year came in 1955, when he went 10-9 with a 3.46 ERA, and on September 5, 1955 he threw a three-hit shutout of the Cubs, the only shutout of his career. Crone finished 30-30 with a 3.87 ERA and 260 strikeouts over 137 games and 546 innings. On June 15, 1957 he was traded, with Danny O'Connell and Bobby Thomson, to the Giants for Hall of Fame second baseman Red Schoendienst — a deal that helped Milwaukee to its 1957 World Series title, which Crone thus missed. He later spent decades as a scout for the Expos, Orioles, Padres, and Diamondbacks. No documented nickname is recorded for him.
