About Johnny Sain

A right-handed pitcher famed for his curveball, Johnny Sain reached the majors after the Boston Braves purchased his contract from Nashville and signed him in March 1942; he debuted that April, then served in the Navy through World War II. Back in 1946, he anchored the Braves' rotation alongside lefty Warren Spahn, inspiring the 1948 Boston Post refrain "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain." Sain won 20-plus games four times (1946, 1947, 1948, 1950), and in his 1948 peak he led the National League with 24 wins, 28 complete games, and 314-2/3 innings, finishing second in MVP voting and beating Cleveland with a Game 1 shutout in the World Series. A three-time All-Star (1947, 1948, 1953), he was traded to the Yankees, where he won three straight World Series titles as a player (1951-1953), earning the Game 1 win in relief in 1953. Over 11 seasons with the Braves, Yankees, and Kansas City A's he went 139-116 with a 3.49 ERA and 910 strikeouts. Nicknamed "the Man of a Thousand Curves," he was also the first major-league pitcher to face Jackie Robinson (April 15, 1947) and later became one of baseball's most influential pitching coaches.
