About Bob Kuzava

A left-handed pitcher from Wyandotte, Michigan, Robert Leroy "Sarge" Kuzava reached the majors with the Cleveland Indians in September 1946 and pitched 10 major-league seasons through 1957 for eight clubs — Cleveland, the Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and St. Louis Cardinals. He compiled a 49-44 record with a 4.05 ERA, 446 strikeouts, and 13 saves; as a rookie with the 1949 White Sox he went 10-6 with nine complete games and finished fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting. His legacy belongs to the Yankees, for whom he was a member of three straight World Series champions (1951-1953). His signature moment came in Game 7 of the 1952 World Series: summoned with the bases loaded and one out in the seventh, he retired Duke Snider and Jackie Robinson — Robinson's pop-up famously run down by second baseman Billy Martin — then set down the final Dodgers to save the 4-2 clincher. Nicknamed "Sarge" for his World War II service as a military policeman in India and Burma, he was inducted into the National Polish-American Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and died in 2017 at age 93.
