About Charlie Silvera

Charles "Swede" Silvera (born October 13, 1924, in San Francisco) was a right-handed catcher who signed with the Yankees organization in 1942 and, after serving in World War II, was converted from the outfield to catcher in the minors before debuting on September 29, 1948, with an eye-catching 3-for-4 game that included a triple. He spent nine seasons (1948-1956) as the New York Yankees' reliable backup catcher behind Yogi Berra, then finished with the Chicago Cubs in 1957. Over 227 major-league games he batted .282 with 1 home run and 52 RBI. Because Berra was durable, Silvera saw sparse postseason duty, yet he collected six World Series rings (1949-1953 and 1956); his lone Series appearance came in Game 2 of 1949. Teammates called him "Swede" for his blond, wavy hair, a nickname pinned on the Portuguese-Irish Silvera by Mission Bowl owner John Swanson. He later coached and scouted for decades, adding a seventh ring as a Marlins scout in 1997, and was long remembered as one of the last links to the Yankees' late-1940s dynasty. He died in 2019 at age 94.
