About Jerry Lane
Jerald Hal "Jerry" Lane was a right-handed pitcher who signed with the Boston Braves organization in 1948 and spent a dozen seasons in professional ball, reaching the majors for parts of three seasons (1953-1955). Born February 7, 1926, in Ashland, New York, he debuted with the Washington Senators on July 7, 1953, and appeared in 20 games as a rookie, going 1-4 with a 4.92 ERA; his lone Washington win came in relief against the eventual world-champion New York Yankees on August 18, 1953. After a strong 1954 at Chattanooga (13-8, 2.97), he was purchased by the Cincinnati Redlegs, for whom he pitched in 1954 and 1955, notching his final major-league victory over Pittsburgh. Across 32 big-league games he finished 2-6 with a 4.48 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and one save in 78.1 innings, a career line dwarfed by his 114-118 minor-league record over 12 seasons. This 1954 Topps #97 is his only mainstream card and is catalogued as his rookie card. Lane died July 24, 1988, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
