About Bob Oldis

Robert Carl "Bucky" Oldis (1928-2025) entered pro ball in 1949, winning a contract at a Florida baseball camp run by scout Jack Rossiter with no signing bonus, then climbing through the minors at Emporia, Charlotte and Chattanooga. A right-handed catcher, he reached the majors with the Washington Senators in 1953 and appeared in 135 big-league games over seven seasons (1953-55, 1960-63) with the Senators, Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies, batting .237 with 56 hits, 1 home run and 22 RBI. Selected by Pittsburgh in the November 1959 Rule 5 draft, Oldis served as the third catcher behind Smoky Burgess and Hal Smith on the 1960 World Series champion Pirates, appearing in Games 4 and 5 against the Yankees as a defensive replacement without batting. He later coached the Phillies (1964-66) and was one of the original 1969 Montreal Expos coaches, and scouted for decades. This card carries an error: the back's birth date reads January 5, 1930 instead of 1928.
