About Pete Runnels

James Edward "Pete" Runnels was a steady left-handed-hitting infielder nicknamed "Pete" because his father went by the same name, making young James "Little Pete." After serving in the Marines and a brief stint at Rice Institute, he signed out of a tryout in the Cardinals organization and climbed the minors before debuting with the Washington Senators on July 1, 1951. Over 14 seasons (1951-1964) he played for the Senators (1951-1958), Boston Red Sox (1958-1962), and Houston Colt .45s (1963-1964), manning first base, second base, and shortstop. A three-time All-Star selection (1959, 1960, 1962), Runnels won two American League batting titles, hitting .320 in 1960 and a career-high .326 in 1962. His most famous near-miss came in 1958, when teammate Ted Williams edged him for the crown, .328 to .322, on the final weekend; Runnels took AL Comeback Player of the Year honors that year. He retired with a .291 average, 1,854 hits, 49 home runs, and 630 RBI over 1,799 games, later serving as the Red Sox's interim manager in 1966. He was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame (1982) and the Red Sox Hall of Fame (2004). Runnels died in Pasadena, Texas, in 1991. His 1954 Topps card (#6) is a Series 1 common issued during his early Washington years.

Variations & how to tell them apart

White Back / Gray Back Series 1 (cards 1-50)

Every card in the first series exists with the standard white/cream back (United States) and a scarcer gray back printed for the Canadian market. The grays were printed in Canada on a darker, gray cardstock and distributed in Canadian nickel packs; they exist for cards 1-50 only and carry a small-to-moderate premium. This is the genuine 'Canadian' issue from which the 1952 Topps gray-back 'Canadian' myth mistakenly borrowed its name.

  • White Back: Standard United States issue. White/cream card stock - the common back for cards 1-50.
  • Gray Back — scarcer: The Canadian printing. Printed in Canada on a visibly gray/darker cardstock and distributed in Canadian packs; exists for the first series (#1-50) only. Scarcer than the white back and carries a premium - modest on commons, meaningful on the stars (Williams, Robinson, Spahn, Snider, Ford, Berra, etc.). Tell: the back stock is uniformly gray - not to be confused with edge-toning on a white back.
