About Tom Wright
Thomas Everette Wright (September 22, 1923 – September 5, 2017), a left-handed-hitting outfielder from Shelby, North Carolina, was signed by Red Sox scout Eddie Montague straight out of high school in 1941 for no bonus. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II (1943–1946), he tore up the minors, leading the Carolina League at .380 for Durham in 1946 and the American Association at .368 for Louisville in 1949. Wright reached the majors with Boston in 1948 and famously tripled on the first big-league pitch he ever saw. Over nine seasons (1948–1956) with the Red Sox, St. Louis Browns, Chicago White Sox and Washington Senators, the 5-foot-11 outfielder made his mark as a dependable pinch-hitter and reserve, batting .318 in a part-time 1950 campaign. He hit .255 for his career with 175 hits, 6 home runs and 99 RBI over 341 games. After retiring, he worked more than two decades at a Celanese textile plant back home in Shelby.
