1954 Topps #204 Angel Scull

About Angel Scull
Ángel Scull Sáez (born October 2, 1928, in Matanzas, Cuba; died 2005) is one of the most famous "phantom" cards in the 1954 Topps set: a right-handed-hitting outfielder pictured with the Washington Senators who never played a single major-league game. A speedy line-drive center fielder, Scull entered pro ball in the Senators organization in 1951, hitting .329 and leading his league in stolen bases for Class D Wellsville. Topps issued this card (his lone Topps card, a rookie card) because Scull was expected to make the 1954 Senators and integrate the franchise, but he was injured in spring training and sold to the Havana Sugar Kings; Carlos Paula broke Washington's color line later that season instead. Scull went on to 14 Triple-A seasons and a standout Cuban League career with Almendares, winning the 1954-55 Cuban League batting crown (.370) and several stolen-base titles. He was elected to the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1997.
