1954 Topps #245 Roy Sievers

About Roy Sievers
A power-hitting first baseman and left fielder born in 1926 in St. Louis, Roy Sievers signed with the hometown St. Louis Browns out of high school in 1944, served two years in the Army, and reached the majors in 1949. That season he won the inaugural American League Rookie of the Year award, batting .306 with 16 home runs and 91 RBI. He starred for the Browns (1949-1953) and the original Washington Senators (1954-1959), the club he represents on this 1954 Topps card, before finishing with the Chicago White Sox, Philadelphia Phillies, and the expansion Senators (1960-1965). His signature year came in 1957, when he led the AL in home runs (42) and RBI (114) for a last-place team, the first player to lead in both while doing so, and finished third in MVP voting. A five-time All-Star, Sievers hit .267 with 318 home runs and 1,147 RBI over 17 seasons, and was the 22nd big-leaguer to reach 300 homers. Nicknamed "Squirrel" for his exploits as a high school basketball standout, he is not enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
