About Heinie Manush

Pictured as a Washington Senators coach (1953-1954), Henry Emmett "Heinie" Manush was already a Hall of Fame outfielder by the time of this card. A left-handed hitter, he broke into pro ball with the 1920 Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League and reached the majors with the Detroit Tigers in 1923, playing 17 seasons for the Tigers, St. Louis Browns, Senators, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Pirates. Primarily a left fielder, he won the 1926 AL batting title at .378, going 6-for-9 in a season-ending doubleheader to overtake Babe Ruth on the final day. He hit .330 for his career with 2,524 hits, 110 home runs, and 1,183 RBI, made the 1934 All-Star team, and helped Washington to the 1933 pennant. In that World Series he became the first player ever ejected from a Series game, snapping umpire Charlie Moran's bowtie back onto his neck. Nicknamed "Heinie" for his German ancestry, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1964.
