About Karl Olson

A 6-foot-3 right-handed outfielder from Ross, California, Karl Arthur Olson was signed by Red Sox scout Charlie Wallgren out of Tamalpais High School in 1948 and reached Boston at age 20 on June 30, 1951. After a monster 1950 at Double-A Birmingham (.321, 23 HR, 100 RBI) he was hailed by The Sporting News as the hottest outfield prospect in the organization, "even more highly regarded than Jim Piersall." But two years of Korean War Army service (1951-53), much of it playing service ball at Fort Ord and in Japan, cost him his edge, and he never fully recaptured it. Olson played parts of six major-league seasons for the Red Sox (1951, 1953-55), Washington Senators (1956-57) and Detroit Tigers (1957), batting .235 with 160 hits, 6 home runs and 50 RBI in 279 games. His best year was 1954 — the season of this card — when he hit .260 for Boston. On Opening Day 1956 with Washington, he went 3-for-4 with two homers before President Eisenhower. After baseball he ran restaurants near Lake Tahoe and worked in construction; he died in Reno, Nevada, on December 25, 2010.
