About Paul Schreiber
Pictured as a Boston Red Sox coach, Paul Frederick Schreiber (b. Oct. 8, 1902, Jacksonville, FL; d. Jan. 28, 1982) authored one of baseball's most remarkable comebacks. A right-handed pitcher, he broke in with the Brooklyn Robins in 1922 and worked in 10 games over 1922-23 before a shoulder/arm injury ended his career in 1924. Hired as the New York Yankees' batting-practice pitcher in 1938 on scout Paul Krichell's recommendation, he was activated in September 1945 when the wartime staff ran thin. On Sept. 4, 1945, at age 42, manager Joe McCarthy sent him in and Schreiber threw three hitless, scoreless relief innings to standing ovations — his first big-league appearance in 22 years and 2 days, still the longest gap between MLB games in history (breaking Charley O'Leary's mark). He pitched twice more that year, leaving career totals of 0-0, a 3.98 ERA, and 5 strikeouts in 12 games. Schreiber followed McCarthy to Boston, coaching the Red Sox from 1946 through 1958 and later scouting for the club. No documented nickname; he is not a Hall of Famer.
