1954 Topps #144 Bill Werle

About Bill Werle
A left-handed pitcher born in Oakland, California, Bill Werle earned an entomology degree from the University of California—which gave him his nickname "Bugs" for his fascination with insects. After starring for the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals, where he won 17 games in 1948, he was sold to the Pittsburgh Pirates and reached the majors in 1949. Werle spent six big-league seasons (1949–1954) with the Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals, and Boston Red Sox, pictured here with Boston. As a rookie he posted a career-high 12 wins and threw a seven-hit shutout of the Cincinnati Reds on July 4, 1949; after a rough 8–16 campaign in 1950 he shifted mostly to relief. He finished 29–39 with a 4.69 ERA and 283 strikeouts over 185 games, later managing in the minors, coaching for the Giants, and scouting for the Orioles.
