1954 Topps #133 Del Baker

About Del Baker
Delmer David Baker (May 3, 1892 - September 11, 1973), pictured on card #133 as a Boston Red Sox coach, spent nearly half a century in pro ball as a catcher, manager, and famed sign-stealer. Signed out of Oregon in 1911, he reached the majors as a backup catcher with the Detroit Tigers, appearing in 172 games over three seasons (1914-1916) behind Oscar Stanage and hitting .209 with 63 hits and 22 RBI. After years managing in the minors, he returned to Detroit as a coach under Mickey Cochrane, earning a ring on the 1935 World Series champions, then managed the Tigers (1938-1942). His 1940 club won the American League pennant, going 90-64 and clinching behind rookie Floyd Giebell over Bob Feller, before losing the World Series to Cincinnati in seven games. Baker later coached the Red Sox (1945-48, 1953-58) and briefly served as their interim manager in 1960. He was renowned as "baseball's canniest sign-stealer," reading pitchers' grips and tells to tip hitters like Hank Greenberg via coded words.
