About Hank Bauer
A former U.S. Marine who served 32 months of Pacific combat with the 4th Raider Battalion and earned two Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts before being wounded at Okinawa, Hank Bauer was signed by Yankees scout Danny Menendez after working as an East St. Louis pipe fitter. The rugged right fielder debuted in 1948 and played 14 seasons, 12 with the New York Yankees (1948-1959) and two with the Kansas City Athletics (1960-1961), batting .277 with 1,424 hits, 164 home runs, and 703 RBI over 1,544 games. A three-time All-Star (1952-1954), he was a fixture on the Yankee dynasty that captured seven World Series titles during his tenure, and he set the World Series record with a 17-game hitting streak. In the 1958 Series he was the hero, hitting four home runs and batting .323 to help beat Milwaukee. Sportswriter Jim Murray famously said he had "a face like a clenched fist," befitting his hard-nosed reputation. As a manager, Bauer led the Baltimore Orioles to their first championship in 1966, sweeping the favored Los Angeles Dodgers.
