About Forrest Jacobs
Card #129 is the rookie card of Forrest Vandergrift "Spook" Jacobs (1925-2011), a light-hitting, slick-fielding second baseman from Cheswold, Delaware. After serving in the U.S. Army in World War II, Jacobs signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and spent eight years in the minors — winning MVP honors at Asheville of the Tri-State League and being voted "Star of the Stars" in the Pacific Coast League — before the Philadelphia Athletics selected him in the Rule 5 Draft in November 1953. He made an unforgettable debut: on April 13, 1954, as the A's Opening Day second baseman against the Red Sox, he went 4-for-4, one of only three players (with Willie McCovey and Delino DeShields) to collect four hits in his first four major-league at-bats. Jacobs played three big-league seasons (1954-1956) with the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates, batting .247 with 164 hits, no home runs, 33 RBI and 22 stolen bases over 188 games. A slap hitter, he earned the nickname "Spook" from a sportswriter around 1947 for dumping hits just over the heads of infielders. He was later inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
