About Hank Aaron
Card #128 is the coveted rookie card of Hank Aaron, arguably the crown jewel of the 1954 Topps set. Born in Mobile, Alabama in 1934, Henry Aaron signed with the Negro American League's Indianapolis Clowns in 1951 before the Boston Braves purchased his contract, seasoning him in the minors at Eau Claire (1952) and Jacksonville (1953). He debuted with the Milwaukee Braves on April 13, 1954, and the right fielder went on to play 23 major-league seasons (Braves 1954-1974, Milwaukee Brewers 1975-1976). A record 25-time All-Star, Aaron won the 1957 NL MVP, took batting titles in 1956 and 1959, and led the league in home runs and RBI four times each. He hit .393 with three homers in the 1957 World Series as Milwaukee won its only title. On April 8, 1974, "Hammerin' Hank" broke Babe Ruth's career record with his 715th home run, finishing with 755 homers, 3,771 hits, 2,297 RBI, and a .305 average. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1982 with 97.8% of the vote. Fittingly for a legend, the card carries an error: the birthdate printed on the back is wrong (it should read February 5, 1934).
