1954 Topps #53 Jack Dittmer

About Jack Dittmer
A left-handed-hitting second baseman, Jack Dittmer was a nine-letter, three-sport star at the University of Iowa before the Boston Braves signed him for a $6,000 bonus in June 1950. He tore through the minors — hitting .373 at Denver in 1950 and making the Southern Association All-Star team at Atlanta in 1951 — and reached the majors with Boston on June 17, 1952. When the franchise relocated for 1953, Dittmer started at second base in the Milwaukee Braves' very first game, teaming with shortstop Johnny Logan to form a slick double-play combination; the city even held "Jack Dittmer Day" that August as busloads of Iowa fans came to cheer him. He played six big-league seasons (Braves 1952-1956, Detroit Tigers 1957), batting .232 with 283 hits, 24 home runs, and 136 RBI over 395 games. On this 1954 Topps card (#53), the back cartoon misstates his 1952 average as .196 when he actually hit .193 — an uncorrected error prized by variation collectors. After baseball, Dittmer returned home to Elkader, Iowa, and was later inducted into the Iowa Baseball Hall of Fame (1978).
