About Vern Stephens

One of the hardest-hitting shortstops in major-league history, Vernon Decatur Stephens signed with the St. Louis Browns for a $500 bonus out of junior college in California, his father favoring the struggling Browns as the fastest path to the majors. After minor-league stops from Springfield to Toledo, he debuted in 1941 and played 15 seasons (1941-1955) with the Browns, Boston Red Sox, and Chicago White Sox. An eight-time All-Star, Stephens was the 1945 American League home-run champion and a three-time AL RBI leader; batting cleanup, he led the 1944 Browns to the franchise's only AL pennant, hitting .293 with 22 homers and 109 RBI. His finest season came with Boston in 1949, when he set a shortstop record with 39 home runs and drove in 159 runs, a total not surpassed for 50 years. Known in baseball circles as "Junior," he hit .286 with 247 home runs and 1,174 RBI over 1,720 games. He died of a heart attack in 1968 at age 48; his 1954 Topps card pictures him with the newly relocated Baltimore Orioles (the former Browns), and he was later inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
