About Dick Kokos
A Chicago native born Richard Jerome Kokoszka in 1928, Dick Kokos was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who came to the St. Louis Browns as a prospect acquired from the Cleveland Indians in a November 1947 trade that also sent $25,000 to St. Louis. Called up midway through 1948, he made an immediate splash as a rookie, batting .298 in 71 games, then became a power source for the second-division Browns, hitting roughly 20 home runs in each of 1949 and 1950. His career was interrupted when he joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War, costing him the 1951 and 1952 seasons. Kokos returned in 1953 and moved with the franchise to Baltimore when the Browns became the Orioles in 1954, but his hitting had fallen off and he was released after that season. Over five major-league seasons (1948-50, 1953-54) he batted .263 with 410 hits, 59 home runs, and 223 RBI in 475 games. He died in his hometown of Chicago in 1986 at age 58. This 1954 Topps card, issued in the Orioles' inaugural season in Baltimore, is a standard base card and not a rookie card.
