About Don Lenhardt

A rangy right-handed outfielder and corner infielder, Don Lenhardt was signed out of the University of Illinois and Washington University (St. Louis) by Browns scout Lou Maguolo in 1946 after Navy service, reaching St. Louis in 1950 at age 27. He debuted in style, batting .273 with 22 home runs and 81 RBI as a 1950 rookie, then bounced through the American League over five seasons (1950-1954) with the St. Louis Browns (twice), Chicago White Sox, Boston Red Sox (twice), Detroit Tigers, and Baltimore Orioles. Standing 6'3", he hit .271 with 401 hits, 61 home runs, and 239 RBI in 481 games, and led the Browns in hitting (.317) in the franchise's final 1953 season; in 1952 he belted three grand slams, including an inside-the-park slam and a walk-off. Nicknamed "Footsie" for his unusually narrow feet and trouble finding shoes that fit, he closed his playing career with a brief 13-game stint for the 1954 Orioles pictured on this card before being sold to Boston, then spent decades as a Red Sox scout and coach until his death in 2014. Fittingly for this error card, its back misdates his return to the Browns as 1953 when he actually rejoined them in 1952.
