About Mike Blyzka

A right-handed pitcher out of Hamtramck, Michigan, Michael John Blyzka (born December 25, 1928; died October 13, 2004) first signed with the White Sox after high school in 1946, was released, and caught on with the St. Louis Browns organization in 1948. He climbed through the minors at Belleville, Marshall, and Wichita, interrupted by Army service around 1951-52, before debuting for the Browns on April 21, 1953. When the franchise relocated the next year, Blyzka moved with it, making this 1954 Topps #152 his rookie card and picturing him with the first-year Baltimore Orioles. Across two big-league seasons (1953 Browns, 1954 Orioles) he went 3-11 with a 5.58 ERA, one save, and 58 strikeouts over 70 games (nine starts) and 180.1 innings, both clubs 100-loss teams. He is remembered for a rough July 19, 1954 relief outing at Fenway Park that ended on Mickey Owen's walk-off grand slam. In the massive 17-player December 1954 trade that sent him with Don Larsen and Bob Turley to the Yankees, Blyzka was the only established major leaguer never to reach the majors again, finishing his career in the minors. Sources record no established nickname.
