About Dick Kryhoski
Richard David "Dick" Kryhoski (1925-2007) was a left-handed first baseman from Leonia, New Jersey, who attended Upsala College and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II, surviving a kamikaze strike on the carrier USS Ticonderoga in the Pacific in January 1945. Signed by New York Yankees scout Paul Krichell in 1946, he tore through the minors (a .396 season at Wellsville in 1946) before debuting with the Yankees in 1949. Over seven big-league seasons he played for the Yankees (1949), Detroit Tigers (1950-51), St. Louis Browns/Baltimore Orioles (1952-54) and Kansas City Athletics (1955), batting .265 with 475 hits, 45 home runs and 231 RBI in 569 games. His best years were 1951 with Detroit (.287, 12 HR, 57 RBI) and 1953 with the Browns (a career-high 16 homers). On July 16, 1953, Kryhoski was part of a rare feat, hitting one of three straight first-inning home runs (with Clint Courtney and Jim Dyck) off Johnny Sain to beat the Yankees. In 1954 he became the first Oriole to wear uniform No. 8, later retired for Cal Ripken Jr. He was never an All-Star and did not reach the postseason.
