About Alex Grammas
This is the rookie card of Alex Grammas, a good-field, light-hit shortstop born April 3, 1926, in Birmingham, Alabama, to a family of Greek heritage. He attended Mississippi State before signing with the Chicago White Sox in 1949, and after being named the American Association's All-Star shortstop in 1953, he debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals on April 13, 1954. Over ten major-league seasons (1954-1963) he played for the Cardinals, Cincinnati Redlegs, and Chicago Cubs, batting .247 with 512 hits, 12 home runs, and 163 RBI in 913 games while posting a steady .969 fielding percentage. Grammas found his greatest success after his playing days as a respected coach: he was Sparky Anderson's trusted third-base coach on Cincinnati's 1975 "Big Red Machine" world champions and Detroit's 1984 World Series winners, earning two rings and Anderson's praise as being "good for seven wins a year." He also managed the Pirates (1969) and Brewers (1976-77). Note the card's uncorrected error: the back lists his birth as April 3, 1928, though the correct year is 1926. He died in 2019 at age 93.
