About Peanuts Lowrey
Harry Lee "Peanuts" Lowrey (1917-1986) was signed by the Chicago Cubs as a shortstop in 1937 out of Los Angeles and worked his way up the minors, hitting .330 for the Double-A Los Angeles Angels in 1941 before debuting in the majors in 1942. A right-handed outfielder over 13 seasons, he played for the Cubs (1942-43, 1945-49), Cincinnati Reds (1949-50), St. Louis Cardinals (1950-54)—the team shown on this card—and Philadelphia Phillies (1955), batting .273 with 1,177 hits, 37 home runs, and 479 RBI across 1,401 games. He was a 1946 All-Star and started all seven games in left field for the Cubs in the 1945 World Series, batting .310 (9-for-29). A superb pinch-hitter, he set a major-league record in 1952 with seven consecutive pinch-hits, breaking a mark held by Ty Cobb. Nicknamed "Peanuts" as a small child—one account crediting a relative who said he was "no bigger than a peanut"—Lowrey also worked as a child actor in the Our Gang comedies and later served many years as a big-league coach.
