About Wally Moon

A left-handed-hitting outfielder from Bay, Arkansas, Wallace Wade "Wally" Moon earned a master's degree from Texas A&M before forcing his way onto the St. Louis Cardinals in the spring of 1954, vowing to make the club or quit. He did more than make it: Moon homered in his first major-league at-bat on April 13, 1954, and hit .304 with 12 home runs and 76 RBI to win NL Rookie of the Year, the accomplishment this 1954 Topps rookie card commemorates. He spent five seasons with the Cardinals (1954-1958) before a trade for Gino Cimoli sent him to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he reengineered his swing to loft opposite-field "Moon shots" over the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum's short, 42-foot left-field screen. Moon was a three-time All-Star and a 1960 Gold Glove winner in left field, and he helped the Dodgers to three World Series championships (1959, 1963, 1965). Over 12 seasons he batted .289 with 1,399 hits, 142 home runs, and 661 RBI. He died in 2018 at age 87.
